The brief called for a modern working family home that would be respectful of the much-adored heritage Victorian yet provide additions that were functional and exciting.

The design intention by Studio Griffiths was two-fold, firstly to create a new and modern first floor addition as well as carving from the existing downstairs space, an intimate and sophisticated master retreat for the parents.

And, secondly to delineate the modern part with a clear threshold and create a new architecture that would transform the existing generic extension and become the soul of the new indoor and outdoor living areas.

A considered approach with era-defining hallmarks such as the lead light windows, soaring ornate ceilings and original fireplaces informed our decisions and choices of what to highlight in the past and then the careful selection of furniture and art became a very important factor when introducing the contemporary chapter. It was important to the clients to let the past and present mingle seamlessly and to explore freely with colour.
